Basilica of the Annunciation

The following article will give information on the Basilica of the Annunciation which is also known as the Church of the Annunciation.

Basilica of the Annunciation is a church located in the northern side of Israel in the city of Nazareth. According to the tradition of the Roman Catholics, the Basilica of the Annunciation marks the location of the place where the sacred event of Annunciation took place.

Angel Gabriel came to Mary to tell her about Jesus Christ who would be born without any father and would be the son of God. It is reported from the Greek Orthodox that this event happened when Mary was at the site of a nearby spring which happened to be the sole water supply for the village of Nazareth. The Basilica of the Annunciation marks this holy event which happened by God’s will and intentions.

The Basilica of the Annunciation is a holy site with a great historical significance attached with it and hence, every year the site attracts many Anglican, Orthodox Christian and Catholic visitors who come to pay homage to this sacred church. According to many Christians, Basilica of the Annunciation also contains the famous Grotto of Annunciation which is famous as the remnants of Mary’s childhood home. This church enjoys the privilege of being one of the minor basilicas and was constructed as a two-story building back in the 1969. Previously, it used to be a mere altar in a cave and was constructed somewhere in the 4th century. The cave was also very famous as the abode of Virgin Mary.

The Basilica of the Annunciation was reconstructed into a bigger structure later on by the Emperor Constantine 1 with whose directions, some other churches having prime importance with Jesus Christ’s life were also founded and rebuilt into better structures. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre and he Church of the Nativity were also found around at the same time as the Basilica of the Annunciation which were famous as the tomb and the birthplace of Jesus Christ respectively.

Today, the Basilica of the Annunciation comprises of upper and lower churches where the upper church is fabulously adorned with Virgin Mary’s mosaics whereas the lower church is centered on the sacred Grotto of Annunciation. From all around the world, people and communities have generously funded for its maintenance and adornment because of its highly sacred status in the Christian world.
